The Power of Memes – An Action Communication Workshop for Environmentalists

Digest your own experiences and emotions. Build community. Strengthen your outreach. Memes can do all of this for forest conservationm and environmental activism. On this workshop we explore the potential of activist memes.

Learn to make your own memes and how to use them for effective action communication – and when not to use them. In order to participate you need to bring a phone or laptop able to connect to the internet. In Merkki there is a password protected guest wi-fi network.

The workshop partners are the environmentalist groups Elokapina, Suojellaan Stansvik and Metsäliike. The workshop is held in English and is focused for activists, media and meme enthusiasts. The workshop is hosted by Meemikuja, the meme gallery of Merkki.

The workshop consists of:

  • The (not so) ultimate answer to ‘what is a meme?’
  • Creative warm-up
  • Meme exercises
  • More meme making exercises
  • Best practices and ethical considerations
  • Lots of shared reflections and ideas for next steps

About our teacher:

Nina is a meme community builder and the founder of the Meme Mother’s Agency, focusing on ethical memes. Nina used memes in an action by Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion Nederland to help mobilise more than 400 people for non-violent direct action against private jets. She also has built an XR activist meme collective.
