The Helsingin Sanomat Foundation supports and promotes high-quality journalism and freedom of speech by funding research, education and competitions. The foundation endeavours to strengthen media literacy, encourage reading as a hobby, and bring researchers and media actors together. The foundation oversees the preservation and exhibiting of the historical archives of Sanoma Corporation. This work is carried out at Merkki.
The foundation spends approximately €4 million per annum on its mission. The activities are financed by income derived from its investment portfolio.
