Archives

We welcome all customers who are interested in the history of media and newspapers. Come and explore a remarkable archive of the meanings and means of communication!

Merkki is a specialist archive of media and newspaper history. We collect and preserve the historical records of the Sanoma Corporation in particular: documents, printed papers, photographs and oral history. The historical records of Helsingin Sanomat and the Erkko family are some of the most frequently accessed parts of our archive. Our research desk provides access to our newspaper database.

Founded in 1990, the Merkki archives were previously known as the Päivälehti archives.

Operated as an open collection of business archives, Merkki is a trustworthy partner for researchers and donors alike. The majority of our records are freely available to researchers and visitors. Some of the materials are restricted on the grounds of privacy, copyright, trade secrets or gift agreements.

Presentations to groups can be organised by prior agreement. The tours are free of charge and last approximately one hour.
